A thermistor is special type of resistor; whose resistance varies significantly with the variation in temperature rather than in standard resistors. A PTC thermistor is defined as a thermally sensitive resistor whose resistance increases with increase in temperature. Generally, PTC thermistors categorized into two types namely thermally sensitive silicon resistors referred to “silistors” and switching PTC thermistors. Silistors exhibits uniform positive temperature coefficient throughout most of their operational range and mostly used for temperature compensation of silicon semiconducting devices. Whereas, switching PTC devices are polycrystalline highly resistive ceramic materials.

Thermistors are mainly used as inrush current limiters, temperature sensors, self-regulating heating elements, and self-resetting overcurrent protectors. Unlike negative temperature coefficient (NTC) devices, PTC thermistors have special electrical and thermal characteristics which are important considerations in a variety of applications i.e. automotive, electrics, etc. These characteristics function as the geometry of the thermistor and for the particular “material system” which is being used. Approximately 80% of PTC’s use falls under two applications namely Heaters and Fuses.
